Reina - 9 (clean sheet, some nice saves from close range, hardly tested)
Arbeloa - 7 (not bad, but right back is still a position of concern)
Carragher - 9 solid as usual
Hyypia - 6 somebody please tell me why he is starting? Are Agger and Skrtyl hurt?
Dossena - 7 shaky start, but settled in nicely.
Kuyt - 7 love the work ethic, but his crossing needs work.
Gerrard - 7 quiet day for stevie g
Plessis - 6 unimpressed, too many touches on the ball for a central midfielder
(Alonso 46) - 9 completely changed the flow of the game upon entering
Benayoun - 8 solid play, didn’t have much room to operate at times
(Aurelio 81) - n/a — not many touches on the ball
Keane - 6 nonexistent out there, and cost L’Pool one goal on Torres shot.
(El Zhar 77) - 8 seemed to provide some much needed energy and flair in the attack
Torres - 9 best striker in the world. Sunderland lost track of him for 10 seconds, and game over!

Scott, you need help mate. your rating are unbelievable and ever so slightly biased?! We were no good yesterday in general, none of the lads played close to their full ability. the midfield didnt control the game but you cant just blame Plessis, and comments on Keane are a bit harsh. he doesnt want to be receiving hoofs from the back, he got nothin from midfield but that will come with time when all are used to his game and he is used to theirs. it was a typical liverpool 1st game of the season under Benitez - questionable line up with little going well, infact that sounds like a typical liverpool performance under Benitez.
Bob - August 17th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Rubbish scott!! Hyypia was shaky at the start of the match but his headers and defence improved throughout the match. Plessis played extremely well and probably deserves more than you give him. Reina in no way deserves a 9 although he kept a clean sheet. Although i think kuyt too deserves a 7.. his crossing was not too dodgy. El Zhar barely deserves an 8 because he played for such a short while m8
steven - August 17th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
Reina- 8- didnt have that much to do but kept a clean sheet and made a couple of saves
Arbeloa- 6- passed back a lot and poor delivery form crosses
Carragher- 8- no mistakes and covered for arbeloa a lot in the right of defence
Hyypia- 7- poor start but did nothing wrong after poor head back
Dossena- 7- a few good long balls and no defensive errors, got forward well too
Kuyt- 6- poor throughout until last few minutes when he collected a few high balls well
Gerrard- 7- not much of an impact but a steady performance
Plessis- 7- may not have created much with his passing but broke play up well
(Alonso 46)- 9- my man of the match with his passing and vision
Benayoun- 6- lost the ball too much and drifted in too much, congesting the midfield
(Aurelio 81)- 7- didnt really have chance to make much impact but looked better than benayoun
Keane- 6- blocked torres’ shot and ran round like a headless chicken. one good piece of skill but has a lot improving to do
(El Zhar 77)- 8- injected some pace and had quite a few touches. should start in place of keane or kuyt in next game
Torres- 9- quite throughout due to little service but showed his quality once keane and benayoun went off to score a great goal
steven - August 17th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
i think ngog, babel and el zhar should play instead of keane, kuyt and benayoun against middlesborugh. they have more pace, skill and all have an eye for goal as well
jab1 - August 17th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
come on guys kuyt deserves a minus rating he was terrible as usual.and so does rafa.leaving xabi on the bench was an awfull call, and not making sigining some quality wingers a priority.we have no width in the team and trying too make kuyt a winger is a disaster.get a grip rafa and sign some wingers and give kuyt away.
Donavan Ried - August 17th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
jab1 08.17.08 at 3:40 pm…. I agree we almost ever thing you say but this “come on guys kuyt deserves a minus rating he was terrible as usual” I think having to play out of postion has a big part to do with it. He is a work horse…Everthing else your spot on
Janindra - August 17th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
David Villa will do the job better than KEANE.
Too many average players! You will come
third in the end this season.
Scott B - August 17th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
Admittedly, I am a bit biased. I will cut Kuyt some slack, given that he is playing out of position, but I am not following Rafa’s decision on Hyypia. The guy is good for one or two absolutely brain dead plays every game, and maybe he can get away w/it against teams like Sunderland, he won’t against Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea, etc. He is solid in the air, yes, but so is Agger and Skrtyl, are they injured? Those guys are better w/the ball at their feet, which is needed!
What are you guys’ thoughts on the Barry situation? I personally think Alonso is just as good, and Rafa should be focusing on wing players in the transfer market. That being said, it will be nice to have our full team back, I think Babel and Mascherano are going to have nice seasons, having a year under their belt at Liverpool.
A view from a foreign viewer... - August 17th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
Sunderland was the better team in the first half, Liverpool the better in the second.
one player changed the game torres… one of the best strikers in the world..
but the sunderland side is MUCH better then the one that played liverpool last season as i saw both matches as well…. where pool simply dominated… liverpool to do a 2th - 5th place sunderland prolly around 8th - 12th
Theodore - August 17th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
I think Hyypiä was one of our best players yesterday. Most of Sunderland’s attacks were stopped so easily thanks to him, with his headers and some clever blocks.
chaz - August 17th, 2008 at 6:00 pm
What is dick kuyt still doing playing for Liverpool, is Rafa BLIND.
Jonny - August 17th, 2008 at 6:32 pm
Keane was a shambles again, he won’t play well at all for Liverpool, Benitez screwed up big again on that one as any Irishman will tell you that Robbie Keane cannot play without a targetman striker alongside him. He’s been attrocious for Ireland since Quinn retired and he will be attrocious for Liverpool without Berbatov, Mido, Kanoute or Sheringham as he has had for spurs in the last 6 years who remembers the Keane Defoe partnership ? Torres Keane will be the same.
RedRobert - August 17th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
What the hell is it with Rafa and Kuyt? He has substituted every Liverpool player last season but never Kuyt. I wouldn’t play Kuyt in our Sunday league.
I can’t ever remember Kuyt playing good for LFC ever. Heskey used to be my worst nightmare when playing for Liverpool, but now after seeing Kuyt……..Come back Heskey all is forgiven. All kuyt is good for is being a sports columnist, damn if he played half as good as he talks we’d be EPL Champions.
David Villa - August 17th, 2008 at 11:59 pm
Lol I agree redRobert. Alonso was on the bench because he had a slight knock. We were poor but its the first game against a decent Sunderland side so not the end of the world. When Mascherano comes back we can dominate the midfield again and buy two GOOD not average wingers. Kuyt is not a right winger!
kopties - August 18th, 2008 at 1:46 am
i think dirk kuyt not really good to be a wingers..i think rafa should get a wingers as quickly to dissolve this problem,i also think kuyt are the best to be defensif than a striker or wingers..match vs sunderland i see half attackers come from yossi benayoun and alonso when he come at the half time..hyypia no really focus on header at first half when sunderland land counter attack but lucky carradona has clear the ball before the ball touch the net..dossena on debut in EPL play smart with pass and pass and dont keep the so long and its good to be defenders cause i think keep the the ball so long make defensif preasure later made a mistake..carragher show his best performance when get clear 2 or 3 shoter from sunderland attack..arbeloa play like a before,no interesting on that and no mistake..GOOD PLAYER..reina keep the header that made my heart up and down but i trust reina cause i think not easy to score when he in first eleven..he are the best goalkeeper in EPL and international..Plessis i think not ready to be play at stage EPL,boring on that..Keane poor play on the game..WHAT THE 20 Million Player..you not play at spurs, you naow are liverpudlian..Come on keane and forget me about the Money that rafa shoulds buy another brilliant striker..Torres,torres liverpool number 9,like this song he show his real performance without keano and i think rafa should make first team like this..
reina
carragher agger skrtel dossena
mascherano
gerrard babel
keano
torres
and we will win this epl this seasons…
0500Silva - August 18th, 2008 at 5:26 am
Liverpool
Reina, 9 was brilliant again
Arbeloa 6
Carragher 7
Hyypia 6
Dossena 7
Kuyt 6
Gerrard 6
Plessis 3
(Alonso 46) 4
Benayoun 9
(Aurelio 81)
Keane 7
(El Zhar 77) 9
Torres 10
Xabi’s effort in that game was totally overated. He flukes one pass between Steven Gerrards legs and it was Torres who done all the work. Complete fluke the ball was bouncing around every where and alonso just hit it forward, somehow went in between Stevie G’s legs and found the magic man Torres. Alonso no way was man of the match, Benayoun was way better. Barry starred for Villa. Alonso is total shite. before that play he done nothing except lose the ball like usual and hit a half ass shot at goal which wasn’t even on target in the end. El Zhar was brilliant when he came on in that second half as well….good energy, good speed and great control. Even took a yellow card for the team. Great work from him….Keane didn’t look too bad at all…was unlucky…Torres though was again the legend….simply brilliant

Liverpool
Reina 8
Arbeloa 5
Carragher 6
Hyypia 4
Dossena 6
Kuyt 6
Gerrard 5
Plessis 3
(Alonso 46) 6
Benayoun 7
(Aurelio 81) X
Keane 6
(El Zhar 77) 6
Torres 7
I rate Keane higher than Torres because Nando did positively fuck all aside from his goal. That is it. At least Keano had some flashes of creativity in the first half, with some clever flicks here and there. He just wasn’t being fed the ball at all.
We need more play through the center and the wings, we can’t have Arbeloa and Dossena just cracking the ball upfield and hoping it lands at Torres’ feet. Gerrard needs to work the ball more, Plessis needs to be more confident if he’s going to start. Xabi played alright but not great.
Benayoun was our best outfield player, and he still wasn’t that great. He won a penalty that wasn’t given, and won a free kick that Stevie pissed away.
Reds need to play better or we’ll be knocking about third or fourth place again.

safc4eva= torres EASY GOAL?? you must be joking.it was a great strike.and how could el zhar get a better rating than torres gerrard and alot of others?
with the player ratings you put out,you make it seem like sunderland won 5-0
make sure you watch your opposition alot more.then comment on them
