Liverpool draw nearer to exciting £8m left winger
by Mr Comfort on August 20th, 2008According to this report, the net is closing on this young Dortmund left winger, as Rafa looks to bring in more creative options to help produce ammunition for his front two.
Why not join the debate at the COS forum?
It was widely reported last week that Liverpool were sending a team over to Germany to negotiate with Borussia Dortmund for their exciting Polish winger Jakub Blaszczykowski.
This morning it has been reported that Liverpool are closing in on him, in the light of Benitez’s failure to sign Gareth Barry.
Rafa has repeatedly said that they need a left-footed player urgently, and Blaszczykowski certainly looks to fit the bill.(footylatest.com)
Jakub Blaszczykowski, or Kuba for short, is apparently very keen to make the switch, even though those running the German side are not very happy about losing one of their star players. The young Pole is apparently a very exciting player to watch, able to beat his man and send in top class crosses, he was due to represent his country at the Euro but was forced out with an injury.
Although he is by no means a name that many are aware of, maybe that is a better option than spending double his fee on the likes of Downing? Who do Liverpool fans think is the best signing that Rafa could make now that the Barry deal is down the pan?

Definitely a right winger. DOH! Hello, COS. A quick wiki would help with your article.

This boy is hot stuff and he is only 22 and he plays on the right.I still hope they Barry! Is everyone blind to the fact that Barry can play at left back and is very good there too. With sick note Fabio at left back and the unproven Dossena the signing of Barry would be very welcome.I also think he would help deliver the premiership better than Alonso would and provide great cover in central midfield.Rafa can change formation without making a sub with Barry playing at left back he can push Barry into midfield and let Steve push on upfront.WAKE UP AND BUY BARRY!
Rich Bitch - August 20th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
Forget barry…It aint gonna happen…not unless Oniel drops the price…and can you see that happnin…
Jakob looks like a tasty little fella…better than Downing.
Donavan Ried - August 20th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
Sorry people, But according to Dortmund’s team roster Jakub Blaszczykowski is a right sided mid field player…….Whats up with you Rafa????? WINGER,WINGER,WINGER………NOT MID-FIELDER….Some out there claimed that “Rafa is amoung the top five managers in the world”………..Wakey,Wakey….HIS NOT IN THE TOP 25, maybe even 35 managers in Europe much less the world.

I just watched a video of Kuba…before i watched it i was a bit like “not another random flop” - but the video was pretty good, looks like he would be a good addition. Good touch, magnificent vision, he reminds me a lot of david bentley, but younger, faster, and less arrogant. his crosses are good, he plays with both feet, and he was cutting the full backs up to shreds, without even having to do nani-esque tricks. Admittedly he is playing in the german league (which hasn’t got a patch on the EPL), but for 8mill, he would be a cheaper alternative that looks like he would be well worth the risk. Good value for money and he will fill a void which we desperately need to fill.
So far we have:
Riise - 4m
Crouch - 11m
Carson - 3.5m
Guthrie - 1m
That totals out at 19.5m (only about 1m off what we paid for keane).
Also if you add in dossena (7m) - we have only spent that 7m + the extra 1m for keane of the boards money.
Say then we sell:
Pennant - 6m (blackburn?)
voronin - 3/4m (hamburg?)
Finnan - 2m (sunderland/villa etc?)
Alonso - 16m (juve, or sell him for 20m to gunners, but they wont pay that lol)
That leaves us with around 27/28m. As the board would have only shelled out 8m for us we would be more than within our rights to demand at least another 15m/20m (argue that its a lot less than the bigger clubs and if they wanna win anything then they have to)
That leaves us with a max of say (for arguments sake, after wages taken out, add ons etc) 45m.
If we can pick Kuba up for 8, or even 10m, that would leave us with 35m to spend. Then i see no reason why we can’t approach man city for michael johnson (young englishman with fair experience, good signing) for say 10m.
And then with the remaining 25m I reckon we shouldn’t mess about and chuck the lot valencias way for david silva. If the rumours are correct we have only considered a bid for around 18m, but 25m could well tempt them as they are financially in the shit. OR, if ppl say “yeah but silva doesn’t want to leave england” - thats fair enough, we should (IMO) go for Diego from Bremen (can play both flanks, in the middle, or in gerrards position behind torres, and he’s only 23).
That way, we would have added a match winning “superstar” - Diego, a cheap youngster who would offer great service to the front two (which we would miss with not having alonso to send 40 yard balls up the park) in Kuba, and a young cm who is arguably the best young, ENGLISH cm around that could be available.
Johnson would be able to learn loads from Gerrard who is at his peak and then he would be able to take his place when gerrard begins to age in the next 4/5 seasons, diego would be another dangerman who would scare defenders, and Kuba looks like he can pick a pass out from anywhere, and has no problems with taking players on and sticking a cross in with either peg.
Please rafa, solve our width issues and bring in some young but quality talent! YNWA.

Just to add to my last comment (will keep it brief!) it is only because if you look at chelseas teamsheet, any1 of Joe Cole, Ballack, Lampard (cunt) Deco, Drogba, Anelka or even Essien can score goals, they are all such a threat, they can easily win a match, and they are not finished in the transfer market, i can see Robinho in a blue shirt by the end of next week.
Arsenal have fabregas, nasri, walcott(not immediately but will get a lot better after xmas if he stays fit i reckon) eduardo(when fit) Adebayor and Van persie, any one of them can win a match.
Utd have Ronaldo, Rooney, Tevez, Nani (?) and Anderson (?) and also could well be sealing Berba soon so they have plenty of goal scoring options, in addition to scholes and giggs who i reckon will get 15 between them easy.
Whereas Liverpool, we have Torres, Gerrard, and now Keane. Babel still isn’t quite ready, and lucas kuyt plessis and mascherano just aren’t goal scorers. By adding Kuba i reckon he’s bring in a good 10 goals and twice as many assists, and Diego would bring in around 15-20 goals i reckon. And as for johnson he could well develop into the next gerrard as he has the raw talent and all round ability which gerrard possessed at his age. If we did sign those players, potentially we could have then 5 match winners in Kuba, Diego, Torres, Gerrard and Keane, and that way if we lost gerrard or torres (god forbid) we could still have the creativity available to bring home matches which we have otherwise drawn.
With these signings i reckon we should be pushing for 2 trophies, and we should at least hit the semis if not finals of the CL.

He’s left footed, you absolute belter.
TorresWillScore40 - August 21st, 2008 at 12:51 am
This guy has great skill and natural speed all people complaining about kuyt on the right shouldn’t complain I think kuba looks like the real deal. As for the left even though i prefer him up front Ryan Babel is a superstar we constantly talk about Torres and for good reason but i got a feeling Ryan Babel will terrorize defenses just as much this season so i’m happy to have babel on the left. In rafa we trust Babel plays against Borough and Liverpool will win convincingly.
lfc4life - August 21st, 2008 at 1:37 am
alex, i am mr realism knocking on your head………..
i am lfc but seriously do you expect any more signings this window?? any cash from sales is already swallowed up in the gaping hole that is the “planned new stadium”. And this is going to be the case for a long time to come. DIC please. This is the problem - George W Bush supporting - he almost paid for his campaign - Tom Hicks. and pussy boy gillette who spat his dummy out as soon as…. anyway… we all know this!
Be happy to watch Stevie and El Nino for the season.

I have to say some of the comments on here are a bit far fetched!!! I do think Barry would be a good addition but I think with Alonso playing well for both club and country at the moment why should we waste £18m - A more realistic option is to give Alonso the time this year, at least until Jan transfer window, and then have another look at things. I would then like to think we would get Barry for a lower price and at least then we will have paid Alonso some respect who in my opinion has been a great player for us. It has been stated money is not an option (in Barry’s case) so we do have £18m to spend (unless the owners are lying…..again!!) we need a winger, I am not interested in all the fancy skills flicks trick just somebody who can beat a man, cross the ball or score….you dont have to be that skillful to be productive!! its about the team and if we can have 1 or even 2 more purchases out wide that will supply Torres, Gerrard and Keane and chip in with a few themselves then great. I think Babel is a good player and will come into his own this year - Pennant not productive great skills but nothing at the end of it, pitty…sell Pennant and Voronin and buy 2 decent wingers, maybe 1 youngster (the french guy possibly, although we all know what happened to our last signing that was dubbed the new Zidane!!) and somebody that will walk into the 1st team, Rafa no more Squad players they are good enough now we need 1st team players that will make a difference. i agree with alex’s first comment apart form the david silva thing. he has just signed a new contract so we wouldnt get him. i would have liked to see him at liverpool but my alternative would be quaresma
mark - August 21st, 2008 at 10:21 am
guy looks good wou;dnt take it he’s coming from this sight if history is anything to go by
Alex - August 21st, 2008 at 12:43 pm
I understand your points that my previous comments were a bit far fetched but why not? the money IS there, the board just don’t want to give it to raffa. If the money wasn’t there then they wouldn’t have given raffa 18.9m at the end of last season to sign mascherano, and a further 20.9m last month to sign keane.
They are being tight with the money but it has to be there, and we took 60m from champs league last season which all went into the stadium already, lfc4life. Lets be honest, my comment (except diego) is completely possible, but i see no reason why we can’t splash out on someone of his ability, afterall we have already spent that sort of money on keane, torres, and mascherano in the last 12 months.
Silva would be best for us but i do think he shouldn’t even be considered anymore, but stranger things have happened (mascherano and teves to hammers anyone?!) But diego would be fantastic, or if not why not ashley young? I really think we need one of these three, + Kuba and Johnson.
And also, if the rumours are true and Arbeloa is going to leave then perhaps Vedran Corluka should be looked into, but only if Arbeloa does leave as we should be able to get 6-7m for him, but the priority is in our wingers, Kuba + Young/Diego/Quaresma even? (i know people say Quaresma is inconsistent how ever i think he possesses that natural arrogance and confidence that we need, he will take players on, push forward, could change wings easily with Kuba, can cross, shoot with either foot-i think playing around the quality we have at the moment would help someone like quaresma to perform week in, week out. And he would cost no where near 25m as i previously said, i reckon we could get him for 13-15m, which isn’t a bad price.
