Wolfsburg are set to make a summer bid for Arsenal’s Per Mertesacker according to The Daily Express.

The German defender has suffered criticism this season after a number of high profile blunders this season by the Arsenal backline.

Those mistakes could cost Arsenal a Champions League qualification spot. They are currently four points behind Tottenham who sit in fourth, though the Gunners do have a game in hand on their bitter rivals.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is keen to avoid a repeat next season and has reportedly made bringing in defensive reinforcements a summer priority.

Mertesacker’s centre-back partner, Thomas Vermaelen, is also thought to have to been told that his place in the side is under threat.

The Belgian defender was dropped for Arsenal’s Champions League game against Bayern Munich, where the team kept a clean sheet on their way to a 2-0 victory.

Wolfsburg are ready to offer Mertesacker an escape route should he be shown the Arsenal exit door this summer.

The player still enjoys a good reputation in his homeland after making 86 appearances for the German national side since making his debut in 2004.

Mertersacker’s former club Werder Bremen are also thought to be monitoring the player’s availability.
