Liverpool have been placed on alert after news emerged that Xabi Alonso is set to turn down the offer of a new deal at Real Madrid according to The Express.

The Spanish midfielder has become an integral part of the team at the Spanish giants since joining the club from Liverpool in 2009.

Liverpool received a fee of £30 million for the player but are no faced with the possibility of bringing the player back to Anfield for a limited financial outlay.

Alonso’s current deal expires at the end of next season and intends to leave the Bernabeu in search of a fresh challenge.

Madrid are keen to retain the player’s services but Alonso will be 33 years old by the time the deal expires and they may take the opportunity to replace Alonso with a young successor.

Alonso has previously spoken of his desire to continue playing first team football rather than burden his club with high wages while sitting on the bench.

Though Brendan Rodgers’s has adopted a youthful transfer policy that goes hand in hand with the Liverpool’s American owners wish to plan for the long term future of the club it seems clear that they would not pass up the opportunity to welcome back such an accomplished performer.
