Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has insisted Thomas Vermaelen has a future at the club according to talkSport.

Vermaelen started the season as the club’s first choice centre back and was made captain by Wenger.

But the Belgian centre back has since found himself dropped from the Arsenal first team prompting speculation about his future at the club.

Vermaelen has paid the price for a number of high profile errors from the Arsenal backline this season which has cost the club valuable points in the race for a Champions League spot.

Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker have since gone on to forge a strong partnership in the middle of the Arsenal defence and that has led to suggestions that Vermaelen could leave North London this summer.

Barcelona have been linked with a move for the defender as they eye up potential replacements for the ageing Carlos Puyol.

The 27 year old defender refused to comment when asked about whether he would leave the club during a press conference last month.

But Wenger moved to pour cold water on speculation the player could leave insisting he sees Vermaelen’s future at Arsenal. Wenger praised the player’s attitude since he was dropped from the starting eleven.
