Chelsea are reportedly made an official move to sign Napoli goal machine Edinson Cavani according to Italian source Gazetta dello Sport.

The Uruguayan international has been strongly linked with a move away from the San Paolo and news of concrete interest from the West London side has been confirmed by reputable Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri.

Jose Mourinho, who is strongly tipped to return to Chelsea this summer, will almost certainly be looking to sign a prolific striker to help boost the club’s firepower. Fernando Torres managed just eight goals in 36 Premier League appearances last term and Demba Ba scored just two top flight goals since his January move from Newcastle United.

Cavani has been in red-hot form in Italy, scoring 104 goals in 138 appearances for Napoli, finishing this season as the top scorer in Serie A whilst helping his side to secure their highest domestic finish in over 20 years.

Rafa Benitez has now been appointed Napoli boss and this could perhaps aid Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich’s pursuit of Cavani, but clearly only if the Spanish manager feels he has no hope of keeping hold of the club’s prized asset.

Edinson Cavani certainly has the physical presence to make an impact in the Premier League but it will certainly take a massive sum, perhaps in excess of the £50m forked out for Torres, to persuade Napoli to sell the former Palermo forward.
