Chelsea are preparing themselves to make a bid for Wayne Rooney in case Manchester United decide to sell the striker according to The Independent.
Rooney’s future has been the subject of almost constant speculation in recent months following rumours that he was unhappy at United.
The England striker was reportedly furious after being left out of the United team for the club’s crucial Champions League last sixteen tie against Real Madrid.
That was reportedly the last straw for Rooney who has found himself increasingly marginalised since the arrival of Robin Van Persie last summer.
Speculation over a potential Old Trafford exit for Rooney intensified after former United boss Sir Alex Ferguson revealed that Rooney handed in a transfer request.
That has since been denied by the club who now insist that Rooney will be going nowhere. Much may depend on the relationship between Rooney and new United boss David Moyes, who was the striker’s mentor as a youngster at Everton.
Rooney may decide to nevertheless start again somewhere new, with Arsenal having already expressed an interest in his signature.
It now appears they are set to be joined by Chelsea, with Jose Mourinho having previously expressed a strong admiration for the player.
