Brendan Rodgers is showing plenty of ambition in the transfer window so far this summer, and it looks like there could be more changes made before the start of next season. The club are desperate to make it back into the top four, and will start by upgrading their goalkeeper. Pepe Reina has not been at his best for a few years now and looks increasingly likely to be replaced by Sunderland’s Simon Mignolet, who has held talks with the club and is edging closer to a switch to Anfield. Reina, meanwhile, is a surprise target for Barcelona, even though he would probably not be first choice for the Reds if he ended up staying.

There may not be too many changes made in defence, as Arsenal look likely to win the race for one of their main targets in Ashley Williams. Kolo Toure has already been brought in on a free transfer from Manchester City and should form a decent partnership with Daniel Agger in central defence. Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique are two good attacking full-backs and should both remain first choice for next season.

In midfield, the injury-prone Lucas might leave after emerging as a target for former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez at Napoli. Rodgers already seems to be preparing for his exit by targeting Wigan’s highly-rated young midfielder James McCarthy, though the Irishman is also a target for Tottenham. He could form a good partnership with club captain Steven Gerrard in midfield.

Further forward could be a very exciting signing in Henrikh Mkhitaryan. The Armenian is a top target for the club and should join from Ukranian side Shakhtar Donetsk in the coming weeks. His best position is as a central attacking midfielder, as he is a creative playmaker also capable of adding plenty of goals from the middle of the park. Out wide, January signings Sturridge and Coutinho have shown plenty of potential and should continue as they have done for the second half of the season. Youngster Luis Alberto has already been signed, but may not be first choice in his first season at Anfield.

Unfortunately for Liverpool, Luis Suarez seems increasingly likely to leave the club in a big-money move to Real Madrid. So far, Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas has been brought in, and may be his direct replacement as the main striker.
