Arsenal are set to sign Brazilian wonderkid Bernard with the 20 year old set to undergo a medical with the North London club this Friday according to respected French source L’Equipe.

Arsene Wenger is apparently stepping up efforts to sign the highly rated Atletico Miniero playmaker, who is also said to be on both Liverpool and Tottenham’s respective summer ‘wish-lists’.

This source claims that the Brazilian international will sign a five year contract worth €3m (£2.5m) a year, which equates to just under £50k a week, a deal that seems fairly reserved even by Arsenal’s standards, where the club’s highest paid players, Theo Walcott & Lukas Podolski, pick up just over £100k a week.

The pint sized winger could perhaps be seen as a replacement for Gervinho, with the Ivory Coast international linked with an imminent Emirates Stadium exit.

Bernard represented Brazil at the recent Confederations Cup and has five national team caps to his name.

The youngster is perhaps more befitting Arsene Wenger’s usual transfer approach, with the Gunners boss being recently strongly linked with interest in both Real Madrid ace Gonzalo Higuain and Man United star Wayne Rooney, not to mention the club’s official bid for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez.

That said, this move for starlet attacker Bernard would still represent a club record deal and could well be one of many as Arsenal look to bring an end to an eight year silverware drought.

Bernard has made 97 appearances for Belo Horizonte based side Atletico Mineiro, scoring 21 goals in the process.
