Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom’s planned season-long loan move to Championship outfit Wigan Athletic fell through due to the ankle injury picked up by right-back Glen Johnson against Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday, according to reports in the Daily Mirror.

The up-and-coming England Under-21 international had appeared to be on the verge of moving to the DW stadium on loan this season, with the 20-year-old having been expected to join the Latics on transfer deadline day.

However, after England international Johnson suffered a nasty-looking ankle injury against the Premier League champions in the Reds’ 1-0 home win on Sunday afternoon, Liverpool head coach Brendan Rodgers decided to postpone Wisdom’s proposed loan switch to Wigan so as to have sufficient cover in the right-back position at Anfield in the immediate future.

And that late change of heart by the Northern Irishman has also scuppered any hopes that both Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers had of also taking the young full-back on loan in this campaign, with Wisdom now expected to cover for Johnson while he recovers from his ankle knock.

The versatile Englishman has so far appeared in a total of 21 matches in all competitions for the Merseyside giants, 13 of which came in the Premier League, scoring one goal in the process.
