Chelsea are set to make a British record bid worth £60m for AS Monaco striker Radamel Falcao as Jose Mourinho looks to bring in a prolific forward worthy of leading his Blues attack according to the Daily Mirror.

Mourinho had been keen on signing the 27 year old prior to his move to join the newly promoted Ligue 1 side though AS Monaco had fought off interest from a number of interested parties to land the then Atletico Madrid ace.

Falcao has gone on to impress at the principality club, scoring nine goals in 13 domestic fixtures to help Claudio Ranieri’s side a strong start to the campaign.

However Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho believes he may be able to lure Falcao to Stamford Bridge and will scout the forward as Colombia take on Belgium in an upcoming friendly.

Mourinho failed with advances to sign Wayne Rooney and Robert Lewandowski over the summer and will hope that an offer of £60m would tempt AS Monaco into selling and the fact that Falcao would be available for Champions League action would be seen as an added bonus.

Prior to his summer move to the Stade Louis II Falcao netted a phenomenal 70 goals in two seasons at the Vicente Calderon and continued discussion about the club’s tax haven status and how that impacts alongside their Ligue 1 rivals may lead to financial penalties being imposed and therefore the chance to make an instant profit on the forward could be one they consider.

Mourinho has seen his current quartet of striking options, Samuel Eto’o, Fernando Torres, Andre Schurrle and Demba Ba, struggle for form, managing just four Premier League goals between them this season.
