The experienced France international has already made up his mind to quit the north London club on a lucrative free transfer when his current contract with the Gunners runs out at the end of this campaign, with Sagna having so far steadfastly refused to put pen to paper on the new deal his employers have put on the table for him.

As a result, Arsenal head coach Arsene Wenger has been busy scouring the market on the Continent for suitable replacements for the 30-year-old, and the man that the Frenchman is said to be targeting is Basel’s Switzerland international.

Schar has been at St. Jakob-Park since July 2012, during which time the right back has managed to find the back of the net on six occasions in his 32 league outings for the club, while so far in this season, the 21-year-old has netted four goals and contributed two assists in total in his 21 matches in all competitions for Basel.

And with a contract with the Swiss giants that runs until June 2015, Schar is expected to cost Arsenal somewhere in the region of £8 million to buy next summer.
