Tottenham Hotspur will make a cut-price move for West Bromwich Albion front man Shane Long if the north London club decide that first-choice striking targets Mirko Vucinic and Fabio Quagliarella are too expensive to bring to White Hart Lane during the January transfer window, according to reports in the Sunday Mirror.

New Tottenham head coach Tim Sherwood has made the addition of a new forward his number one priority for this month, especially now that England international Jermain Defoe is on the verge of joining Major League Soccer outfit Toronto FC after agreeing a bumper £90,000-per-week contract with Ryan Nelson.

And if that transfer does go ahead as expected, then Sherwood will be left with just two marksmen at his disposal for the entire second half of the campaign, Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor.

Spurs technical director Franco Baldini has already flown to Turin to pass his eye over the Juventus striking duo of Vucinic and Quagliarella, however, the Italian knows that neither player will come cheap to buy, meaning that the club may be forced to switch their focus elsewhere.

And if that is the case, then the attacker Spurs have earmarked is West Brom’s Republic of Ireland international.
