Sunderland have no new injury worries to contend with, though goalkeeper Kieren Westwood will require surgery on a shoulder injury that is set to keep him out for up to three months.
Manager Gus Poyet is also still without defender Carlos Cuellar, who continues to recover from a thigh injury.
Southampton will travel to the northeast without striker Dani Osvaldo as he completes a three match ban.
However, Calum Chambers should be available after recovering from illness, but midfielder Victor Wanyama is not yet ready to return from injury and will miss out.
Sunderland beat Southampton in the League Cup at the Stadium of Light earlier this season.
