The San Siro side are keen to bring in the 28 year old, who has started just three Premier League fixtures this season.

Inter Milan are looking to pair Vermaelen with Man United’s Nemanja Vidic, who is also a target of the Serie A side, but Arsene Wenger may well fight off interest in the former Ajax man.

Wenger may well see Vermaelen as a back-up option but still wants to keep hold of the club captain, not least as he doesn’t possess many central defensive options bar the Belgian and first choice pairing Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.

Vermaelen had been a regular in the Arsenal side but may now see the lack of first team football as affecting his prominent role in the Belgian national team set-up.

Inter Milan would perhaps stand a better chance of tempting Vermaelen if they secure a Champions League berth for next term though currently Walter Mazzarri’s side are some 11 points off such an achievement.
