The Croatian international endured a tough start to life at the Santiago Bernabeu following his £33m move from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012, but has seen his form make a dramatic turnaround this season and he is once again back to his best.

The 28-year-old has highly praised during his previous spell in the English top flight and City boss Manuel Pellegrini has been impressed with his performances in the Spanish capital that he is looking to bring him back over the summer.

However, even though Pellegrini admitted that he would be interested in making a move for the former Spurs star, he confessed that doing so would present an entirely different challenge.

“Real Madrid are perhaps unlikely to sell him after the form he’s been in,” a source close to the club said.

“But City always look out for the best players and Modric is one that would be a great addition. We’ll see, I’m sure the club will do what they can.”

Modric had been linked with moves to both Manchester United and Chelsea over the summer as they looked to capitalise on his failure to settle in Spain, but his turnaround in form has seen him become one of the club’s most valuable players.
