Man City have set their sights on Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen according to the Daily Mail.

The 28 year old Belgian international has become a bit-part player over the past year, with Gunners boss Arsene Wenger seeing Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker as his first choice central defensive pairing, and as such the former Ajax man may well be seeking an Emirates Stadium exit.

National team colleague Vincent Kompany has recommended that his Etihad Stadium side make a move for Vermaelen and the pairing of the two Belgians may well be a sensible option for boss Manuel Pellegrini to consider.

Pellegrini has used the likes of Joleon Lescott, Martin Demichelis and Matija Nastasic alongside Kompany but arguably none of the trio have worked all that well as partners for the Man City skipper.

Vermaelen has made just three Premier League starts this season and may well be tempted by a move to Man City and clearly Arsene Wenger has little qualms about selling players to domestic rivals.

Arsenal signed Vermaelen in June 2009 and he has gone on to 142 appearances for the North London side.
