Any Manchester City Approach For Arsenal Right-Back Bacary Sagna Would Be ‘Illegal’, Says Arsene Wenger

Frenchman’s contract at the Emirates runs out this summer.

Arsenal head coach Arsene Wenger is confident that unsettled right-back Bacary Sagna will sign a new deal with the north London club, while also suggesting that any approach by Premier League rivals Manchester City for the Frenchman would be “illegal”, according to reports in the Daily Mirror.

The France international’s current contract with the Gunners now only runs until the end of June and so far the 31-year-old has yet to put pen to paper on a new deal with the north Londoners.

And with the player therefore set to be available to pick up on a lucrative Bosman-style free transfer this summer, Sagna has been allowed to open negotiations with foreign-based clubs who may be interested in his services from the start of the year, but not Premier League suitors though.

“He has an offer, he has not come back to us yet. That (City offer) cannot be right because it’s illegal,” said Wenger.

“I’m confident he will stay but we will accept his decision. No matter what his decision will be, we will accept it and go on with it.”
