“Of course we can beat Arsenal but we’ll have to play very well,” said Bruce. “All the pressure will be on Arsenal because they haven’t won anything for nine years. We will enjoy the occasion and learn from the experience of this semi-final.

“Arsenal are a great side with great traditions. They had 60,000 here on Saturday. A big club, a big history and a top class manager. So, we are up against it. We will do our best.

“We made more mistakes in the first half hour than in six months. We kept passing back to them and didn’t do anything right,” said Bruce. “But you have to give credit to Sheffield United. How good were they in that first half? There was one stage where they must have put 25 to 30 passes together. We were a bit tentative and we let them play, which is not like us.

“I was thinking about making a change after 30 or 35 minutes because it simply didn’t work, but because of the respect I’ve got for the players and the squad, I didn’t think it was right to make changes in a semi-final so early. In the second half, it was a different Hull City and thankfully it was the right result.”
