The Belgium international has been interested a host of clubs this season as his future at the Emirates continues to raise question marks and his agent, Alex Kroes, has insisted that Vermaelen will not make any decisions before the World Cup this summer.
The centre-back has fallen down the pecking order at the Emirates this summer and had been linked with making a move away during the January transfer window, but he instead decided to stay put and fight for his place.
Rafa Benitez is a known admirer and is likely to step-up his efforts to land Vermaelen after Napoli held preliminary talks with Kroes.
“Yes Napoli have been on the player and have stepped forward, but just as the Neapolitans have, other clubs have shown their interest and not just Italian clubs,” he said.
“You cannot say, though, that the player is close to a transfer to Napoli. I repeat – wait until after the World Cup, where Vermaelen is going to do his best, then we will face any kind of discourse for his future.”
Arsenal are thought to be keen on hanging onto him, but Arsene Wenger may decide to cash in on him over the summer should a suitable replacement be found.
