Liverpool have agreed a £4 million pound fee for the transfer of England international striker Rickie Lambert from Southampton and hope to announce the deal today, reports the Times.

The 32-year old striker is also apparently due for a medical in Melwood today to complete a swift move to Anfield, where he is being viewed as the backup striker to the strike pairing of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has made his intention to sign a third choice forward very clear, and has identified Lambert as the ideal squad player, given his vast experience in England.

Lambert has an impressive tally of 117 goals in 235 appearances for the Saints since having joined them in 2009, and has also scored 29 times in the last two seasons that Southampton have spent in the Premier League.

Having been released by Liverpool as a youngster and toiled in the lower leagues for much of his career, it would be a dream return to Anfield for the veteran forward.

The news though could mean the end of the line for Liverpool’s Italian striker Fabio Borini who is wanted at Sunderland where he just completed a season long loan.
