Arsenal Line Up Surprise Bid For Versatile Chelsea Defender To Replace Departing Duo

Wenger keen on Blues stopper.Arsenal could be lining up a shock move for Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic as they eye a new signing to replace Thomas Vermaelen, according to the Metro.

With Thomas Vermaelen reported to have agreed terms on a switch to Manchester United this week, Arsene Wenger’s side could be short of options at the back next season, as right-back Bacary Sagna has also already sealed a free transfer to Manchester City.

The Gunners boss is seemingly a fan of Ivanovic, 30, who has been a key player for Chelsea since joining the club in 2008, filling in both in the middle and on the right of their defence and earning a reputation for getting forward to score important goals.

However, the Serbian could face a tougher time getting into Jose Mourinho’s starting lineup next season, with the arrival of new left-back Filipe Luis likely to push the in-form Cesar Azpilicueta out to the right-hand side, while youngster Kurt Zouma will provide cover for John Terry and Gary Cahill in the centre.

Still, it seems unlikely that Chelsea will agree to sell a key player to a major rival, with Mourinho notably blocking Demba Ba’s proposed loan switch to the Emirates Stadium in last summer’s transfer window.
