Brendan Rodgers had earmarked the Sevilla star as a key component to his new look squad that he hopes will be capable of competing in both the Premier League and the Champions League next term.

However, Sevilla have stalled negotiations after the Reds made an official offer of £16m last month.

Reports coming from Spain are now suggesting that the club are holding out for an offer closer to the £20m mark, hoping that a bidding war will start between the Reds, Tottenham and Real Madrid.

But after growing frustrated at the lack of progress, Rodgers will now turn his attentions toward landing Ryan Bertrand instead.

Bertrand has never been able to break into the Blues first team, and has spent much of his career away from the club on loan, like last season when he spent the second half of the campaign with Aston Villa.

A number of left-backs have been touted to join the Anfield club, but Rodgers sees Bertrand as a cut priced option in the position and feels he has displayed enough quality to warrant a starting spot in his squad.
