Bayern Munich could be prepared to rival the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United for the signing of in-form Roma centre-back Mehdi Benatia, according to Fichajes.com.
The Moroccan international has been one of the most impressive defenders in Serie A for some time now, joining Roma just last summer after impressing at previous club Udinese, and he is now wanted by several top clubs around Europe.
Chelsea had reportedly eyed him up as a possible replacement for David Luiz after his departure to Paris Saint-Germain, while United are also in the market for new signings in defence after the departure of key duo Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand this summer.
Still, Bayern may now have emerged as strong contenders to win the race for his signature as manager Pep Guardiola seeks some new arrivals to help improve his side’s chances of getting back to winning ways in the Champions League next season.
With the Bavarian giants being well beaten 5-0 on aggregate to eventual winners Real Madrid in the semi-finals of the competition this season, there is some pressure on Guardiola to improve his options at the back as he bids to maintain the high standards set at the club after their treble-winning season of 2012/13.
