Liverpool could be turning their sights on another striker, according to the Mirror, with Jay Rodriguez from Southampton emerging as a potential alternative to Wilfried Bony despite the Englishman’s serious injury that was sustained towards the end of last season.

Rodriguez, who was ruled out of the World Cup after picking up a horrible knee injury during Southampton’s trip to Manchester City last season, would not be available until well into the start of the season – but Rodgers appears to be a big fan of the former Burnley striker.

He netted fifteen Premier League goals for the Saints despite his season being cut slightly short, however, and formed a fine partnership with Rickie Lambert – the striker who has already made the move from St. Mary’s to Anfield this summer.

The Reds had been thought to be closing in on a £19m deal for Swansea striker Bony – but a row over the fee means that Rodgers has been forced to look for alternatives as he looks to fill the huge void left by departing striker Luis Suarez.

Rodriguez was signed for Southampton by Nigel Adkins from Burnley when they first got promoted to the Premier League and has adapted to the league extremely well, even breaking into the England squad and looking likely to secure a 2014 FIFA World Cup squad place until his injury.
