Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has assured supporters that the club’s £14m move for Liverpool striker Fabio Borini will be completed ‘in the next few days’.

The two club’s agreed a fee four weeks ago, but the deal has yet to be finalised. However, the Daily Mail believes that the Uruguayan has reiterated his desire to seal the deal with the Italian and believes it could be completed before the weekend.

Borini was seemingly unwilling to return to the Stadium of Light, where he scored ten goals last season, preferring to stay and fight for his place at Anfield – but the 23-year-old may now admit defeat in his efforts to impress Reds manager Brendan Rodgers.

Poyet told Sky Sports News: “The idea was to have the deal done a few weeks ago, but for different reasons it was impossible, but we are confident that maybe in the next few days we can do something about Fabio.

“I’m always thinking that we can add quality players, especially the ones we know, and let’s hope that confidence I am trying to bring to the club is confirmed…with the signing of Borini.”

Liverpool have already signed former Southampton striker Rickie Lambert this summer, but having seen Luis Suarez and Iago Aspas depart the club, in addition to their proposed move for Loic Remy falling through, the Merseyside club are light on striking options.

But it seems that Rodgers would rather cash in on Italian starlet Borini, who has scored just twice for the club, and spend the money elsewhere.
