The 19-year-old, widely regarded as one of the most promising young talents in England and perhaps Europe, is also attracting the attention of European giants such as Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain as he continues to stall on signing a new contract with his current club.
Sterling first established himself as a key part of the Liverpool first-team last season with some superb displays, and he now looks to be one of the club’s most important stars after the sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona.
Chelsea are hoping to turn his head as his long-term future at Anfield looks uncertain, with a £48m bid one that might have to be considered by the Reds if Sterling’s contract remains unsigned for much longer.
It would no doubt be a major blow for Liverpool to lose such a superb young talent to one of their Premier League rivals, but they have sold big names to Chelsea before, with Fernando Torres notably swapping Merseyside for a £50m move to Stamford Bridge.
