Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard would have preferred his club to reinvest the Luis Suarez money in proven world-class stars, rather than using the windfall on young, mostly unproven players, the Telegraph reports.

When the Uruguayan superstar left Anfield to join Barcelona for £75m, rumours were rife that the Reds would splash the cash on a high-end replacement, but instead, Brendan Rodgers and owners FSG decided to spend over £100m on Dejan Lovren, Lazar Markovic, Divock Origi, Emre Can, Alberto Moreno, Adam Lallana, Mario Balotelli, Javier Manquillo and Rickie Lambert.

“I would love a Fabregas or Costa here, but I have to understand how the owners want to do it and accept I am a Liverpool player, not a Chelsea or Manchester City player,” said the midfield veteran, who retired from England duty following the World Cup failure this summer.

“They [Fenway Sports Group] have gone on record saying they want to bring exciting young talent into the club. You can’t just expect that to click overnight.”

Liverpool finished above Chelsea last season in the Premier League, but have fallen way behind them now following both clubs’ summer transfer activity.

While Liverpool arguably weakened, Chelsea filled every problem position with a world-class addition. Diego Costa has taken the Premier League by storm, scoring nine goals already, while Fabregas leads the assists charts with eight.

Neither Rickie Lambert or Mario Balotelli have registered a Premier League goal.
