Manchester United look to have fended off competition from Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea in the race for highly regarded Belgian winger Zakaria Bakkali.

The 18-year-old broke into the PSV first team last season and was set to join Spanish champions Atletico Madrid in the summer before a move broke down amid claims his representatives had held talks with Manchester United.

However, according to the Daily Star the Red Devils have moved into pole position for teenager dubbed the ‘new Eden Hazard’ and a pre-contract agreement could be agreed in January as the talented youngster’s deal expires at the end of this season.

Reports in Belgium have gone so far as to claim the wonderkid won’t play for PSV again after refusing to discuss the possibility of a new contract with the Eredivisie club and that manager Phillip Cocu has demoted Bakkali to the Dutch side’s ‘B’ team.

The contract rebel has already made his full international debut but it looks like his brinksmanship has backfired and the youngster will have to wait until the summer to escape his reserve football hell.
