Gunners move closer to a deal for Mattia Destro.

Arsenal are close to securing a January deal for the signing of prolific Italian striker Mattia Destro from Serie A outfit AS Roma, report the Sun, as the club prepare to meet the player’s agent, who is heading to London this week to discuss a potential move away from the Stadio Olimpico.

Destro has a fine goalscoring record for Roma and is one of the most prolific young strikers in Serie A, but his all-round game is not quite trusted by the club’s manager Rudi Garcia, meaning that Destro spends a lot of time on the bench for Roma, with Francesco Totti preferred in a false nine role despite his advancing years.

This has meant that Destro is open to a move away from the Stadio Olimpico, with Chelsea initially having been linked in the summer, and Arsenal now stepping up as the leading contenders to secure a deal for the 23 year-old who made his name in the second tier with Siena.

Gunners fans will perhaps be surprised that Wenger is targeting another striker, with Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck currently sharing the burden of playing upfront on their own, but it could indicate that either Joel Campbell or Lukas Podolski is set to be allowed to leave the club in search of first team action.
