These rather mixed signals come after the Stamford Bridge outfit beat Derby County to reach the semi finals of the Capital One Cup, while they are also top of the Premier League and amongst the favourites to triumph in the UEFA Champions League. The FA Cup starts in January, and the Blues have a favourable draw at home to Watford for their first match.

Asked whether they could do the quadruple by Sky Sports after the match, Fabregas commented, “I’m enjoying playing in this team; we have a very strong squad and we want to go for everything. We can get better, 100 per cent, and we know that. Everyone is really focused and professional but the next two or three weeks are very important.”

“Time will tell [how good this season can be]. We definitely have the talent, the discipline and the courage to do it, I’m sure of that from what I’ve seen so far in my short time here. I can see the team doing well but we will have to work hard and, at the end of the season, we will talk about it,” he added.

This is a stark contrast to Mourinho’s answer, who refused to entertain the possibility, stating: “No. We don’t speak about this. People spoke a few weeks ago about being unbeatable in the Premier League. We never did it. Now [following their loss to Newcastle] people speak about a Quadruple and we never did it either. We have feet on the ground.”

The London club go up against Stoke on the weekend, and they will be looking to win in order to stay top of the league ahead of Manchester City. The Citizens have come in to form in the last few weeks, while Chelsea recently suffered their first defeat of the season.
