The Dutch international played for City between 2009 and 2012 before leaving the North West to join AC Milan. After three tumultuous years in Italy his contract is now set to expire in the summer, and the 30 year old has confirmed he wants a new challenge.
United boss Louis Van Gaal is a huge fan of De Jong from his time in charge of the Dutch national side, and views him as the midfield enforcer that his team have lacked at times this term.
He will face competition for his signature from Ajax – the club where De Jong began his professional career in 2002. The player himself has said no decision about next season will be made until late April at the earliest, and he might even wait until the end of the current season.
