The Red Devils signed the 21-year-old from PSV Eindhoven on Thursday subject to a medical for a fee of around £25 million. Such a high fee will put pressure on the youngster to perform straight away, but the Saints boss thinks that people will have to wait for him to get used to English football’s high intensity game.

Koeman said: “For him it’s a fantastic move. He has had a great season and last season made the step up to be a senior player, not a junior player. He still has to develop himself. It will be tough for him because the Premier League is tough in a physical and mental way.

“It’s a big step for him. But he’s a great talent, a fast player and a very good signing for Manchester United.”

However, with a record like he has in the Eredivisie this season there could still be an expectation of big things from the winger. During the current campaign the Netherlands international has scored 21 goals in 28 appearances in the Dutch top flight.

He will also be helped to settle in by manager Louis van Gaal, who he has worked with before when the 63-year-old was in charge of the Holland national team. Daley Blind and Robin van Persie also add a Dutch flavour to the squad which could assist Depay.
