The Red Devils have lost their last three matches to put doubts over their chances of qualifying for the Champions League. Last season David Moyes was sacked after it became mathematically impossible for them to get in to Europe’s premier club competition. However, they are still four points ahead of Liverpool, who have to play Premier League champions Chelsea on Sunday.

This comes after the Dutchman spent over £150 million last summer to bring new talent to Old Trafford. He is also set to be handed a similarly sized transfer kitty in the next transfer window, which will put pressure on further improvements next time round.

Van der Sar points to the 63-year-old’s experience with Ajax, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona as to why there is no one better for the job at United.

He said: “Louis never has a lot of doubts in his life, so that’s great. I think it is important to have a strong manager who really know his stuff. He had success with Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich and the national team. If he couldn’t do it then it would be difficult to find someone else who could.”
