The Belgian only left Chelsea last season, but has done so well over the last season that he could be in for a quick return to the Premier League. The 23-year-old accrued a massive 24 assists and 15 goals in all competitions during the campaign, helping his team to second in the Bundesliga as well as a run in to the latter stages of the Europa League.

De Bruyne said of a potential move: “You never know what will happen in football. A club might step in and make an offer that pleases Wolfsburg and also makes me happy. Right now, I say that I will stay in Wolfsburg.”

However, he added: “I don’t like it when players say they’ll stay no matter what and are gone after the first offer,” to put his future in doubt.

Red Devils manager Louis van Gaal revealed to The Guardian back in February that his transfer priority this summer would be a creative midfielder, and the youngster could be a perfect fit. However, the form of Juan Mata and Ander Herrera since that statement may have changed the 63-year-old’s mind, meaning that other areas get attention first.

Certainly their recent announcement that terms have been agreed with Memphis Depay, reported by the BBC, seem to show this to be true.
