Former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson has admitted that he is fearful that Raheem Sterling will quit Anfield this summer in order to play in the Champions League once again next season.

The Reds’ hopes of a top-four finish are all but over following a 1-1 draw against champions Chelsea last weekend as they trail Manchester United by six points and have an inferior goal difference with just two games remaining and Thompson believes failure to qualify for Europe’s elite club competition could see Sterling depart:

“I think it will be very difficult for him to stay at Liverpool now. He’s shown all the signs that he’s ready and prepared to leave the club.” he told Sky Sports.

Sterling has been heavily linked with a move away from the Merseyside outfit since revealing that he had rejected a new contract and insisted that contract talks would wait until the summer, but fresh reports in the Metro on Tuesday morning hinted that he is looking for a move back to his home-town of London.

Those reports would suggest that a switch to either Arsenal or Chelsea is on the cards for the England international but Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has already insisted that the 20-year-old is going nowhere this summer as reported by the Mirror Online at the start of the month
