The Gunners are clearly keen to improve on their current options up front after another frustrating season in the Premier League and Champions League, even if they could make it two FA Cup wins in a row if they beat Aston Villa at Wembley on Saturday.

Olivier Giroud has been on the receiving end of much criticism in some big games, and it’s hard to argue that Martinez’ record would probably make him an upgrade on the Frenchman if he did come in.

The Colombian international has had another highly prolific season in the Portuguese top flight, scoring 32 goals in all competitions to make it a total of 92 in 132 appearances for the club.

According to the Daily Express, Arsenal have activated the buy-out clause in his contract and look the big favourites to snap him up, with further signings in attack planned as they consider a move for Barcelona winger Pedro.
