The Croatian spoke to Hammers officials on Saturday about a move to Upton Park, having left Besiktas at the end of the season. With the 46-year-old at the helm the Turkish side beat the Reds in the last campaign, but it is still his time in charge of his national team that has him linked with new jobs.

The former Boleyn Park hero worked with Lovren while he was working with the Croatia set up, and seems keen to do so again if he comes to the Premier League. With this successful history behind them the defender is apparently open to the idea of joining the East London side.

The 25-year-old had a terrible debut campaign at Anfield, making errors in many of his 36 appearances under Brendan Rodgers. Poor positioning and concentration were the main issues, but a new manager might bring his Southampton form back in again.
