The 27-year-old suffered from a loss of form in the second half of last season after a bright start had endeared him to fans. He netted three times and grabbed four assists in his first six games, but then only added one goal and six assists in the remaining 26.

Towards the back end of the campaign the formerly out of favour Ashley Young even took his place in the starting XI, and a sending off against Arsenal in the FA Cup was a another notable low point. The winger doesn’t seem to understand how it came to this point, and this has led to him feeling disappointed at his own impact so far.

However, the Red Devils’ record signing still has no plans to leave the club.

Asked if he had been affected by his troubled debut campaign, Di Maria said: “Yes. For me, and my family. Because not everything goes as I want, because I don’t play. Because I came with an intention and end up on the bench. It’s hard to tell how I feel there.

“I started well, with goals and assists. I was having a good time, until I was out. It’s a little hard to explain why I do not play.”

He added about whether he wants to leave: “No, because I’m not thinking like that. In Madrid there were times when I was whistled around the stadium but faced it and then it turned around. I like to deal with things.”

This outburst won’t have gone unnoticed by clubs across Europe though. Bayern Munich have been linked to the Argentina international by the Daily Star, while the Daily Mirror believe that Barcelona are interested in the midfielder.

Although the player himself seems to still want to prove himself, manager Louis van Gaal may not be overly worried if he were to leave the club after his turn in form. With Memphis Depay having joined already this summer, the Dutchman has an option out wide.
