Arsenal eye Manchester United transfer target as possible alternative to La Liga striker (Video & Twitter)

Arsenal are ready to turn their attentions to Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski if they are unable to land Karim Benzema.

Reliable Spanish journalist Kike Marin broke the news via his official Twitter account on Thursday morning to reveal the Gunners view the Polish hitman as an alternative to the Real Madrid striker.

The North London outfit have been relatively quiet in the transfer market so far this summer, with goalkeeper Petr Cech the only major arrival at the club this summer but it appears manager Arsene Wenger is ready to splash the cash once more before deadline day in just under a month’s time.

A move for Benzema reportedly hinges on whether new Los Blancos manager Rafael Benitez brings in a striker or converts Cristiano Ronaldo into a centre-forward for the upcoming campaign [via Express Sport].

Should the Frenchman opt to stay at the Santiago Bernabeu then the Gunners have a plan in place to lure Lewandowski to the Emirates Stadium and would have to pay in the region of at least £35 million, as that is the price that has been quoted following rumours that Manchester United are interested in the player [via Sky Sports].

It remains to be seen whether Bayern would be willing to cash in on the 26-year-old especially after letting Bastian Schweinsteiger join the Red Devils earlier this summer and it would be extremely difficult to replace a player of Lewandowski’s goalscoring prowess.

Following his move to the Allianz Arena from fierce rivals Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer last summer, the Poland international scored 17 goals in 31 league games to inspire Bayern to the title once again.

His record in Europe was just as good after scoring six goals in 12 Champions League appearances including a fantastic finish in the semi-final second leg tie against Barcelona.
