Liverpool face new competition for Barcelona ace from Premier League rivals

Southampton are attempting to hijack Liverpool‘s move for Barcelona star Adama Traore, according to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo [via Metro].

The Reds have already started negotiations with the Blaugrana for the 19-year-old [Daily Mirror], but it seems that they are still in danger of being gazumped by the Saints. The South coast club finished just one place below Brendan Rodgers’ side last season, and will be looking to strengthen so they can better that next time round.

Ronald Koeman and co. are thought to have contacted the Spain Under-19 international about a transfer, and with their reputation for developing young talent may be able to sign him ahead of their more illustrious rivals. More first-team opportunities at St. Mary’s may also be a draw for the forward, as the arrivals of Danny Ings, Christian Benteke, and Roberto Firmino mean the offensive positions are well serviced at Anfield.

Although Traore is highly rated at the Nou Camp according to the Metro, they could still let him leave on a permanent basis. Having Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi, and Neymar up front means first team chances are limited, and the recent arrival of Arda Turan will make them even more sparse once he is allowed to play in January.

The youngster is yet to play a significant role for Barca, having only made four appearances for their senior side. However, he has been a regular in their ‘B’ team since graduating from the famous La Masia academy, and would likely be able to make an impact in the Premier League as soon as he arrived.
