Manchester United transfer target scores twice as Bayern Munich ease to victory in season opener

Thomas Muller shrugged off speculation linking him with a summer transfer to Manchester United by hitting a brace for Bayern Munich in their comfortable 5-0 win over Hamburg in the opening game of the new Bundesliga season on Friday night.

The German international has reportedly been the subject of a huge £50million bid from the Red Devils this week and he showed why he is regarded as one of the best forward’s in European football with two second half goals at the Allianz Arena.

Defender Medhi Benatia and Robert Lewandowski had given the hosts a 2-0 lead before Muller got in on the act as he headed home new signing Douglas Costa’s brilliant cross for his first of the night.

Minutes later the 25-year-old scored again as he latched onto a pass from Lewandowski to round Rene Adler and slot the ball into an empty net and give the champions a comfortable lead.

A further strike from Costa sealed an emphatic win for the Bavarian outfit as they sent out a message to the rest of the teams in the division that they are gunning for a fourth successive league title.
