The Spanish international performed a stunning u-turn by committing his future to the Red Devils on Friday afternoon and he has moved to end all speculation regarding his state of mind following the sudden collapse of his proposed transfer to Liga BBVA giants Real Madrid.
United manager Louis van Gaal had not picked de Gea in the club’s first six games of the new season due to the ongoing speculation and it looked almost certain on transfer deadline day that the 24-year-old would join Los Blancos in a swap deal taking Keylor Navas to Old Trafford.
However, the move broke down due to the necessary paperwork not reaching the La Liga headquarters in time and any hopes Madrid had of signing the goalkeeper on a free transfer next summer have gone with news of his contract extension.
The Spaniard posted a message on his official Twitter account shortly after the news was released to the media and thanked the club’s supporters for sticking by him.
