Liverpool could be without star midfielder going into Arsenal game

Liverpool midfielder Emre Can could be set to miss the first Premier League game of the season against Arsenal.

The 22-year-old midfielder may get selected for the match day squad but he may not be able to play the full 90 minutes.

The Germany international was quoted by the Daily Mail as saying: “To be honest I’m not 100 per cent and I have to work hard to get there.

‘I have been working hard to get there for next week, then we will see how far along I am.”

Can joined the pre-season US tour later than most of his teammates due to national team duties for Germany at Euro 2016.

The Liverpool midfielder started in the semi-final defeat against hosts France but the long season took its toll on Can and he was given an extended break.

After a brief visit to Aydin in Turkey where his family originate from he travelled over to the US West Coast to let his hair down in Los Angeles and Las Vegas before joining up with the squad ahead of the Roma clash.

Despite being involved in the Reds last three friendlies Can has only managed to play 45 minutes and lacks match fitness for a full 90 minutes game.

Liverpool take on Arsenal on Saturday 14 August at the Emirates in what could end up being a clash between two title challengers.
