Bid made: Manchester United ‘very close’ to £44million transfer after opening talks

Manchester United are described as being ‘very close’ to Fabinho after launching a £44million bid to seal the transfer of the Monaco star and opening talks over the deal.

This is according to Gianluca Di Marzio, who also states that Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho is keen to bring in the Brazilian midfielder to play as a wing-back.

Fabinho has largely played central midfield in a defensive role for Monaco this season, though he has also shown himself capable of playing in defence in the past.

It remains to be seen, however, if that is the 24-year-old’s best role, as he’s shown himself to be one of the finest defensive midfielders in Europe at the moment after his form there for Monaco.

United could also do with options in that area given the situations of Michael Carrick, who is set to retire in the summer, and Marouane Fellaini, who is nearing the end of his contract.

It may be that Mourinho would use Fabinho in both roles, though speculation elsewhere suggests United could be looking at other targets as options in midfield.

The Manchester Evening News recently linked United with an interest in Bayern Munich midfielder Arturo Vidal, as well as Napoli’s Jorginho and Borussia Dortmund starlet Julian Weigl.

Back in January, the Daily Mirror also linked United with a possible move for Nice midfielder Jean Seri, though that deal never materialised.

Di Marzio’s report is somewhat vague, but describes Fabinho as ‘very close’ to United as talks begin after their opening bid, and concluding that the player’s future could be in the Premier League.
