Pundit says England’s best starting lineup includes ‘special’ Chelsea star

Cole Palmer is Gareth Southgate’s best choice to start as England’s left-winger in this summer’s European Championships.

The former Manchester City academy graduate, who joined Chelsea last summer in a deal worth a reported £40 million, is enjoying an impressive opening campaign at Stamford Bridge.

Although the Blues, as a collective, have been disappointing, Palmer, 21, has been a rare standout performer. After 24 Premier League appearances, the 21-year-old has already scored 11 and assisted eight — incredible numbers for such a young and inexperienced player.

And former Aston Villa and Liverpool attacker Stan Collymore believes Southgate cannot afford to overlook him ahead of this year’s European Championship.

‘Special’ Cole Palmer should start for England

Although Chelsea’s number 20, who Collymore has described as ‘special’ has been included in the Three Lions’ latest squad for this month’s upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Belgium, the former pro wants to see him ahead of everyone else in Southgate’s left-wing pecking order.

“I know Southgate has included Marcus Rashford and Anthony Gordon, but I would go with Cole Palmer,” he said in an exclusive interview.

Cole Palmer is in great form for Chelsea.

“And I know Palmer plays on the right for Chelsea, but he’s left-footed so can definitely do a job on that side of the pitch.

“He’s one of the most in-form attackers in Europe too so why not be brave and give him the chance? — I would — the kid looks special.”

Confirming his best England starting lineup, Collymore has also included Luke Shaw at left-back, with Harry Maguire, John Stones, Kyle Walker and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford making up the rest of the defence.

A midfield trio of Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice and Phil Foden is the 53-year-old’s preferred engine with Bukayo Saka and Palmer playing either side of Harry Kane up front.
