It appears that the magic of the FA Cup does not extend as far as helping out a lower-league club in dire financial straits. Liverpool travel to Luton Town tomorrow for their third-round tie, with The Times reporting that the Merseyside club have turned down the League One club’s plea to donate their share of the gate money to their opponents.
“They probably said, ‘We have to pay players £100,000 a week. You must be joking, otherwise we will be like you,’ ” Kevin Blackwell, the Luton manager, said. “You just have to accept it. There are people in life who have got a Rolls-Royce while some people have a Mini. We are Mini drivers.”
The Hatters recently went into financial administration, leaving them scrapping for their lives at the foot of League One. Surely it would have been a kind gestre, not to mention a clever PR stunt, for Liverpool to donate the equivalent of what Steven Gerrard earns in a week. Perhaps a Reds player will step forward and make a contribution off the pitch as well as on it.
