Another season of struggle for Newcastle United?

Despite the fact that the Magpies nearly entered into a relegation scrap last season, it doesn’t appear as though they’re in a rush to acquire new players. You might have thought that Kevin Keegan would be shipping out dead wood and bringing in fresh new talent by this stage of the season, yet Newcastle had added just two players to their squad and neither set the pulse racing.

The Guardian report that Special K is delighted that Danny Guthrie has decided to move up to the north-east for £1million, although is this really the sort of signing that will land the Mags into the top six next term?

“I’m absolutely delighted we have got Danny,” Keegan said. “He proved himself in the Premier League last season, so we know he can play at that level. He’s at the right age and is a good signing for us.”

This is the club’s second signing of the summer, after Jonas Gutierrez signed from Real Mallorca a fortnight ago. However, looking at the current squad, you’d have to say that Newcastle are more likely to finish in the bottom half of the table right now, especially if Michael Owen gets crocked at some point during the campaign. Defensively, they are likely to be as porous as usual and it could be a season of disappointment at St James’ Park, despite the messiah now being in charge.
