‘We won’t be relegated’ claims Newcastle defender: Are they too good to go down or something?!

It’s still pretty tough trying to call the three teams that will be relegated this season. West Brom have really pulled their socks up recently, while Stoke’s solid home form means that they are definitely not cannon fodder. Then we have the trio of north-east clubs residing near the foot of the table, although there’s one team who are surely just in a false position aren’t they?

Newcastle United weren’t expecting a relegation scrap this season after flirting with the idea last term. However, another mixed bag of a season (to put it politely) means that they are just one point above the relegation zone ahead of this weekend’s trip to The Hawthorns. However, Sky Sports reports that Magpies defender Steven Taylor (he who drops like a dead fly in the opposition penalty area) remains confident that his team will beat the drop.

He said in the Daily Express: “We are not even thinking of the word ‘relegation’ and it won’t happen.

“We have to accept we are in a battle to avoid it, but this is a battle we will win.

“We have some world-class players and although it will be a battle, we have the fighting qualities to stay up.

“Then, we have to regroup next year. That’s the aim; to get this season out of the way and ensure we are playing in the top flight next season.”

Get this season out of the way? Hate to break it to you Steven, but Newcastle are one of the worst teams in the Premier League right now, especially without Shay Given who has saved your bacon on numerous times over the years. Which world-class players is the defender referring to? And should he be so bullish about his team’s prospects given their recent poor run of form?
