Etihad Staidum club in pole position to sign Napoli striker.
Manchester City are in pole position to sign Napoli striker Edinson Cavani, to a member of Roberto Mancini’s coaching staff.
Cavani is one of a number of strikers on the shopping list of Manchester City as they look to bring in a replacement for Mario Balotelli in the summer, with Liverpool’s Luis Suarez and Atletico Madrid’s also under consideration.
But Mancini’s side are in pole position to capture Uruguayan international Cavani, who has a £55million release clause in his contract and is destined to leave Serie A in the summer, ahead of Chelsea and Real Madrid.
Manchester City coach Angelo Gregucci told a Naples-based radio station: “City will definitely have competition for Cavani, who is dominating the Italian league with his goals and sacrifices for the team and whose contract has a £55m buy-out clause.
“Edinson is scoring a huge number of goals this season, and it will be difficult for City to take him. The 10 biggest clubs in Europe all have Cavani in their sights.”
City are planning a clear-out of their first-team squad in the summer with strikers Edin Dzeko and Carlos Tevez among the names that could leave the Etihad Stadium and it appears Cavani is the number one candidate to replace them.
Tevez is expected to be sold at the end of the season after intimating that he will not sign a new contract at City and is prepared to run down his current deal.
